Vinko Globokar was born 1934, in Anderny (France). From the age of 13 to 21, he lived in Ljubljana (Slovenia) where he made his debut as a jazz musician. He then studied trombone with André Lafosse at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Paris, where he took first prize in both trombone and chamber music. He studied composition and orchestra conducting with René Leibowitz, counterpoint with André Hodeir, and he furthered his studies with Luciano Berio. He did the first performances of a great number of trombone works by Luciano Berio, Mauricio Kagel, Karlheinz Stockhausen, René Leibowitz, Louis Andriessen, Jürg Wyttenbach, Toru Takemitsu, etc.

Globokar conducts his work with international orchestras such as the Westdeutscher Rundfunk, Orchestre Philarmonique de Radio France, Radio Helsinki, Ljubljiana, Warsaw, Jerusalem, and others. In 1969, he co-founded the improvisation group ‘New Phonic Art’, with C Alsina, JP Drouet and Michel Portal. From 1967 to ’76, he was the professor of trombone at the Staatliche Musikhochschule in Köln, and between 1973 and ’79, he was in charge of the department of instrumental and vocal research at IRCAM in Paris. From 1982 to ‘99, he has taught at the Scuola di Musica de Fiesole in Florence, and directed the contemporary repertoire of the Orchestra Giovanile Italiana. His compositions total over 100 pieces. His solos, chamber music, orchestral and choral pieces, as well as his music for theatre, are published by CF Peters and Ricordi. He has, to date, produced two books published by Pfau Verlag (Saarbrücken): ‘Laboratorium - Texte zur Musik 1967-1997’ and ‘Individuum-Collectivum’, dedicated to creation – both individual and collaborative. He now lives in Berlin.
