Sargasso Sea
Pronunciation: [särgas'O]
part of the N Atlantic Ocean, lying roughly between the West Indies and the Azores and from about lat. 20N to lat. 35N, in the horse latitudes. The relatively still sea is the center of a great swirl of ocean currents and is a rich field for the marine biologist. It is noted for the abundance of gulfweed on its surface. The Bermuda islands are in the north-western part of the sea. |
Sargasso is an independent label with a difference. Far from the realms of mainstream commercialism, Sargasso offers the discerning listener an insight into today's best innovative sounds by established as well as up-and-coming artists. Since 1993 Sargasso has established itself as one of the main UK independent labels of contemporary experimental new music.
Just like the Sargasso Sea is a tranquil area at the center of the great swirl of the Atlantic Ocean's currents, our label is a meeting point of all musical currents and influences. Because Sargasso is artist-led (as opposed to accountant-led) it understands the need for artistic integrity and risk-taking in today's music industry. Each CD is part of a series, a journey of discovery in the vast oceans of contemporary music. Today's listeners want more from a label than just to release more CDs. They expect a clear philosophy of musical values which they can trust and follow.
All our artists are given total creative freedom and no concessions to the commercial mainstream are allowed! This does not mean that Sargasso releases are necessarily inaccessible or difficult to listen to. Just that they faithfully reflect the imaginations of their creators without trying to make the music fit pre-established and often nonsensical categories. Electronic, improvisation, modern, avant-garde, electroacoustic, minimalism, songwriting, ambient, etc are all fused into one sonic flow. The integrity, quality and diversity of Sargasso's releases are a guarantee against conformism and superficiality.
Sargasso's role is:
- to act as a filter, selecting what it considers to be the most exciting new music around
- to allow that music to be heard as widely as possible
- to maintain the artist's control of their work
- to build the trust of its listeners
- not to give in to fashion, facility or greed.
Sargasso became a part of Esfor Limited in 2008 and is now one of several labels under the Esfor ‘umbrella’, all with similar outlooks to the release of music to the public. Great products can be created by great artists given freedom to create.
